Six days of fuss, running errands and heat –
you’re toiling, across the soil pulling the plough.
Not till the seventh will you rest your feet –
it is all spoken and all is sung now.

From tea-drinking to lunch you push through the day,
uneasy; a fleck of dust scratching your eye.
You then, like spurs, tinkle the burdens away,
determined to simply let life pass you by.

But just when the tired hand has come around
to sleeping, the murmuring head just about
to doze – you then hear a hammering sound
knocking the sharp nail of tedium out.

A bee’s buzzing down the musical scale;
gypsies are whitewashing their chalets…
A piece of bread under hand, an axe at avail
you set off again through the winding alleys.

There, amidst the field, in the dead part of day
lives the tree – you stop and before it you rise.
You keep beating it, till it finally gives way.
And your soul exults, and tears drop from your eyes.
